Hello all

This is a big, big plea for anyone who has ever taken (and passed) a BCU level 3 inland assessment, or is involved in assessing level 3 inland courses, or to anyone with some good ideas. I have got a level 3 inland assessment coming up soon and feel I'm pretty much ready but could always do with a bit of extra knowledge.

Does anyone have any of these that they could share:

1. Useful exercises for teaching beginner-improver white water kayaking

2. Useful acronyms to follow (like CLAP)

3. Crib sheets (i.e. for briefing group before getting on water)

4. Book/Video/Website recomendations

5. Things that you should always do on assessment, and things definitley not to do on an assessment

6. Any other useful nuggets of information most welcome

Any help AT ALL is very, very, very, very gratefully receieved. Any knowledge that can be emailed - si_waites@yahoo.com
Thanks and happy paddling

Hi.
Sorry but I cant say im any kind of authority on the BCU assessment thing, but hopefully rivers we can all share!
If your on river leadership stuff then it basically a question of usuing your nouse. Assess where the hazards are and what the ability of the group is, and work from there. All river safety is a judgment call, take control and communicate. If your delegating decisions or roles from others be clear that you are doing so.
I really resist the ideas that there are rules to follow. Each situation is different. As general rule your assessors have got a script to work to that diminishes the importance of flow of the group and speed on the river (which in real situations is really important).
So take your time. Call it.
Good luck with the assessment.
Any BCU voices here?
