View Full Version : Guess the river

Jon

OK... almost like a competition but there's no prize, hence not a competition!

Identify the river... Easy one to start with!

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w308/jonsgr8/riverguess1.jpg

If you're right and are able to, you can upload a picture and continue the competition for others. I currently use www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) to upload pictures for displaying in posts. It's really easy!

Soon I hope to have our own image hosting facility on the forum but it's taking a bit of setting up.

Keswick Greta, old disused railway bridge. Captain Scum in yellow boat, Chris Hargreaves behind. Jon Green somewhere around. How's that....

Jon

Very good Captain! I thought you couldn't see a hand in front of you on the river!;)

Captain Scum

My turn now then - got the picture, registered with Photobucket, but how do I get it on here???

Jon
23-07-2007, 11:11 PM
OK Captain;

As you said, register with photobucket.com
To upload an image click on MY ALBUM
Click on browse, along side the one of the upload boxes and find the image you wish to upload.
Click the big UPLOAD button and wait for it to do it's thing.

Your picture is now stored on Photobucket!

Next we need to get it from Photobucket to your post. So....

Below the upload box see your uploaded image album
Below each picture there is 4 boxes with code in them
The last one is IMG Code... this is the one we need to use on the forum
Click in the IMG Code and it will copy it (yellow box springs out saying copied)
If you paste this code into your post on our forum the picture will appear in your post in the position you post the code in your text.

You will find that the standard image size that photobucket produces is massive so:

before you copy the IMG Code click on edit above the image and then on resize image above the top left corner of your image. Select 480 x 640 and photobucket will resize the image. Then just copy the IMG Code and paste it into your post again!

See, I told you it was simple..... once you've done it, it's easy!

Judging by the rocks on the riversides and the colour of the water I would say that its a glacial melt river....no Idea beyond that! :(

Got the Greta Jon posted... slower than Captain Scum though.

Captain Scum

chris foster
25-07-2007, 07:57 AM
GYR maybe ?

steve ed
25-07-2007, 05:04 PM
Just a stab in the dark but i think its either
romanche or durance, claree, onde, gyr, gyronde, veneon, guil, biaisse, ubaye, or verdon
its a classic alpine view and makes me think of pain au choc , hangovers and good times

Captain Scum
25-07-2007, 06:16 PM
Chris Foster is geographically the closest, but Steve Ed has won it just by mentioning the choc au pain, the hangovers and the good times. It is of course the Gyronde.

Jon
25-07-2007, 06:55 PM
Looks like a perfect paddle too! Was that when you where in the Alps last year?

Captain Scum
25-07-2007, 08:59 PM
Yes - pretty spectacular isn't it. Not quite as easy as it looks in places.

steve ed
25-07-2007, 09:26 PM
I was camping by the gyronde in june , Fab area wish i was there now but this damp spell over heres a bonus

chris foster
25-07-2007, 10:51 PM
Im gutted, now you mentioned it yes it didnt quite look steep enough for Gyr :-), I camped on the municipal site at the side of the Gyronde for 3 weeks last summer, we always use that one its so much better than the one by the slalom site. Is that the section that runs though the camp site, just below the bridge at Les Vinguex ( spell) ? ( wish I was there also )

Jon
25-07-2007, 11:05 PM

first river lord scum
26-07-2007, 10:12 PM

chris foster
27-07-2007, 09:15 AM
That would be my guess also

steve ed
27-07-2007, 04:21 PM

Its east of penrith

Captain Scum
27-07-2007, 06:57 PM
What about - the first drop on Swindale Beck?

steve ed
28-07-2007, 03:52 PM
Well done captain scum it is the first drop on swindale beck

give yourself a pat on the back

Jon
29-07-2007, 09:30 PM
Steve - Was that you launching yourself off the edge of the drop?

Captain Scum - hope you didn't cheat to answer that picture quiz;)

Anyone else before I stick another up?

Captain Scum
29-07-2007, 10:34 PM
Wash your mouth out Jon - cheat - me? Even joiners have feelings.

Here's another pic for you all to ponder over - the more experienced paddlers will recognise this one.

chris foster
30-07-2007, 12:39 PM
Is it the Upper Caldew?

steve ed
30-07-2007, 02:22 PM
Hi John it has a drop of about 2m then after about another 2m theres the main drop of about 4.5m a double boof move with a rock on the lead in just covered to knock you off line just in case its not hard enough, oh and the bottom pool is'nt that deep

so its fun all the way

Captain Scum
30-07-2007, 07:20 PM
No Chris - much further north than that.

Jon
30-07-2007, 07:24 PM
Looks like Skiddaw in the back ground?

Captain Scum
30-07-2007, 07:38 PM
Have you paddled north of the border jon.

Jon
30-07-2007, 07:45 PM
Why.... I'm guessing from that question that it's a Scottish river then!

Yep, in my slalom days most of the competitions where up north of the border.

Is it the Etive?

@ Steve ed - Rather you than me mate!

first river lord scum
30-07-2007, 08:10 PM
Captain Scum were the Lochaber mountain rescue team involed in the descent of this river and was,nt somebody helping police with their enquires later in the day ,a certain noted gobbler paddler? If you can.t find it grind it

chris foster
31-07-2007, 12:56 PM
Hi, I had 2 rivers in mind i will try the other one then, Upper Roy ?

Captain Scum
31-07-2007, 09:49 PM
Well done - exactly right. A rapid called "wish you were here" on the Upper Roy. As First River Lord Scum suggests - one of many memorable trips to Scotland. :)

chris foster
31-07-2007, 10:34 PM
Roy, I agree a classic, as is Upper Caldew. The lines in the hillside narrowed it down, I didnt know if it was the parallel roads in Glen Roy or the real road at the side of the Caldew. Sorry I dont do much photo' to add.

Jon
01-08-2007, 07:41 PM
Ok, here's a new picture...

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w308/jonsgr8/Image019.jpg

No clues yet!:D

Captain Scum
01-08-2007, 07:53 PM
Torver Beck???? - last drop.... maybe

Jon
01-08-2007, 08:05 PM
Nope! You have got two things right though - it's in Cumbria and it's a beck.:p

Captain Scum
01-08-2007, 09:22 PM
The other one I had in mind - is it Sprint Mill Falls???

Atti
01-08-2007, 10:35 PM
Deffinatley a very low sprint mill falls

Jon
02-08-2007, 01:00 PM

Atti
02-08-2007, 10:57 PM

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/2298/dscn0291wy4.jpg

Its a realy fun drop, we just parked and hucked, it was too low for the rest of the beck...

Jon
03-08-2007, 08:04 PM
That's just north of Penrith right? Must be a nice deep pool!

GREAT PICTURES ATTI!

Atti
03-08-2007, 08:30 PM
Yep, this drop is just downstream of a little place called staffield, the beck soon runs into the eden. The pool seems nice and deep, if a little undercut at the edges though, there is a rocky rapid just above the fall, with an eddy right on the lip. Havent managed to do the rest of it yet, but its on the (ever growing) list :)

Jon
04-08-2007, 07:29 AM
As you won that one Steve Ed, have you got another picture to slap up?

Change the file name so it doesn't give it away!

Atti
11-08-2007, 12:40 AM
Fraid not!

Captain Scum
11-08-2007, 06:37 PM
How about another clue

Atti
12-08-2007, 02:39 PM
Ok, on this river there are 7 or 8 man made drops, its about a 500m section of river, its in france and its not far at all from l'argentiere. The drop shown in the photo is the biggest:p And thats all you're getting :p

Atti
17-08-2007, 07:17 PM
Ok, for anyone interested, it was the fournel ;)

Jon
17-08-2007, 11:00 PM
Awww.... I was just about to say that! :D:D:D

chris foster
18-08-2007, 12:16 PM
Arrhh just got back from a week in the Outer Hebrides and logged on, thought it was the Fournel. Ive never kayaked the drops but done the canyon trip many times, its a great afternoon out. Back in Tebay watching it rain out of the window so may go looking for water.
